Research Interests

My research is carried out in four basic areas: the first area covers the design and operation of manufacturing processes; the second area focuses on sustainable decision making; the third area is about material and product design; and the last one focuses on plant safety. Research in the first group includes process synthesis and automatic generation of operating procedures. In the sustainability area we investigate approaches for the modeling and optimization of socio-technical systems, diffusions of new technologies, supply chain design and simulation, and agent-based modeling. Research in the materials and product design area includes product-service system design, and parameter identification of metallic materials. In the safety area, my research involves the reuse of past accident data, and the development of methods for safety evaluation. Common elements between the areas include: artificial intelligence reasoning, ontology design and evaluation, data mining, mathematical and statistical modeling, and meta-heuristic optimization.
